Shadowplay

Shadowplay, 2012

I continued to use animal heads and made sculptures that talk about dual life – Shadows of Domestication. This sculpture is the head of a cat, doubled, as does the shadow. The work is called “Shadow Play”. The heads are enlarged to the size of a human body and I chose a black marble with white veining: Marquinia from Spain.

It is a dark marble that makes reality dark, like a shadow. You realize that the sun brings shadows, a word brings the unheard one, a life touches those others that you never see.

Black Spanish Marble,

110cm x 120cm x 80cm / 44" x 47" x 32"

This piece is made after the Shadows of Domestication series. It is a large version of the fighting, nuzzling, dancing catheads. In this large scale, the piece opens up for a different relationship with the viewer. I am showing it as an example of a large-scale piece made of stone, that needs an extensive infrastructure. The piece weighs several tons. The stone has a solidity that I am emphasizing through the apparent fullness, the two heads are one mass, solidified in their gestural play.
